The First Annual Anza-Borrego Desert Photo Contest Highlights and Helps to Protect the Largest State Park in the
Contiguous United States

Borrego Springs, CA .

Each year, hundreds of thousands of visitors explore and enjoy the wonders of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, from its jagged canyons to its delicate wildflowers; from its magnificent bighorn sheep to its sweeping skies. No wonder this is one of the most intriguing, and photogenic- places on Earth.
As we enter this holiday season, citizens can contribute to protecting this very special place by taking photos and sharing the beauty and serenity of this extraordinary parkland.
The Anza-Borrego Foundation & Institute, in partnership with California State Parks, invites you to bring your inspiration and creative genius to this first- ever Anza-Borrego Desert Photography Contest. Our contest is free of charge and open to amateur and professional photographers, with a special category for children 11 and under. For downloadable contest rules and entry requirements, visit http://www.theabf.org/photocontest.htm or call (760) 767-4063.
The goal of the competition is to encourage visitors to use photography as a means to raise awareness of and educate others about this nearly 650,000 acre parkland and surrounding region, stated ABI Manager Deborah Knapp. We hope to draw the attention of hundreds of participants from all over who will capture imaginative and striking images of their favorite canyon, wildflower or desert creature and share the secrets of this desert with others and by doing so, spreading the word about the need to preserve these magnificent parklands.
All photos must be taken in the park and submissions are due by February 7, 2007. Contestants may enter up to four photos in any of four categories: desert flora, fauna, landscape and people enjoying the desert. A panel of judges will evaluate all entries and grant awards based on impact, originality or creativity, sharpness, proper exposure, color and presentation.
Popular astronomer/photographer Dennis Mammana, who will be helping with the judging, said,Beauty is everywhere in the natural world around us. Not only does it provide us with marvelous opportunities to take stunning photographs, but photography can be extremely helpful in understanding the fragility of this unique environment, and even in making scientific discoveries. I think the Anza-Borrego Desert Photography Contest is a wonderful idea and I look forward to seeing all the submissions! The expert judging panel also includes photographers Paul Johnson, Sam Webb, Thomas Antel and Joe Rafetto.
Winners will be announced at the Awards Weekend, February 17-18 in Borrego Springs. Winning photos will be on exhibit at the Borrego Springs Art Institute throughout the week and published on the Anza-Borrego Foundation & Institute web site.
The Borrego Art Institute, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, is committed to promoting art in the Borrego Valley . Since it opened its gallery in March 2005, the Borrego Art Institute serves the community as a learning center for artists of all ages and a place to connect the public, local artists and their works of art.
Related activities include a January 13 Desert Photo Contest Workshop on Creative Techniques to Impress the Judges featuring Paul Johnson and Dennis Mammana, and the Awards Weekend February 17-18 that will include an award ceremony, silent auction, desert sunset photo excursion and early morning guided photo safari. Pre-registration for these events is strongly encouraged.
The photo contest is one of a string of art focused activities in the Blooming with Art event series in the growing art community of Borrego Springs.
