News Release —
The Anza-Borrego Institute Announces Two Scholarship Programs
The Anza-Borrego Institute, the education and research arm of the Anza- Borrego Foundation, is pleased to announce the annual offering of two competitive grants programs to assist graduate students conducting research in conservation biology and insect ecology.
The first of these, the Howie Wier Memorial Conservation Awards Program, provides assistance in field studies in ecology, systematics, evolutionary biology, and conservation biology in the Colorado Desert and Peninsular Range region of southern California. One or more grants of $1,500 to $2,000 will be awarded annually to assist graduate students with travel, supplies, equipment and other costs associated with field work.
Harold A. “Howie” Wier (1952-2001) was a native San Diegan and a lifelong naturalist. He worked as a biological consultant and conservation biologist throughout southern California and was active in the California Native Plant Society, a past President of San Diego Audubon, and a long-time member of the Anza- Borrego Foundation. This grant program was established by Anza-Borrego Institute with the help of Mr. Wier’s family, friends, and colleagues as a tribute to his interests and passion for preserving and understanding the remaining wild places of southern California.
The second program, the Anza-Borrego Institute Entomology Grant Program, assists students with studies in insect ecology including life histories, predator-prey relationships, insect-plant interactions and/or conservation issues. A grant of $1,500 will be awarded to help students with travel, supplies, equipment, and other costs associated with field work. This Entomology Grant is made possible by a generous donation from ABFI members with an interest in the insects of the Anza-Borrego region. Exceptional research proposals from undergraduate students will also be considered under this program.
Proposals are due by 5 p.m. on November 16, 2007, with an award date of January 4, 2008. For proposal guidelines, or to make a donation to add to either fund, please visit the Anza-Borrego Foundation and Institute web site at www.theabf.org or contact Sally Theriault, Manager, Anza-Borrego Institute at 760.767.4063.
The Anza-Borrego Foundation & Institute is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation supporting land acquisition, education, interpretation and scientific studies in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and the surrounding region.
