Overland Mail 150th Anniversary 1857-2007
August & September

This year will mark the 150th anniversary of the San Antonio to San Diego Overland Mail route. The SA&SD route was the first intercontinental communication link joining the newly-won western territories with the Midwest and the East Coast. The Butterfield Stage route followed in 1858. The route crosses some 35 miles of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Parklands.

To commemorate this historical accomplishment, a number of agencies have joined forces to offer a full array of fun events including everything from road tours and equestrian trips along the historic route to a weekend celebrating the arrival of the mail in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park August 31 and September 1. Here’s the schedule:

August 31 - September 1: Celebrating the West on the Move: 150th Anniversary of Overland Mail in Old Town San Diego

September 15: Driving Tour to Stage Station Sites-Warner’s Ranch to Old Town San Diego
